When a distribution ERP slows down, most teams blame hardware. The real cause is almost always database maintenance and query patterns.

Your distribution ERP is not dying. The database underneath it is sick, and nobody at your current MSP knows how to diagnose it.
Every wholesale distributor eventually runs into it: the ERP that used to be fast is now slow. Order screens take 20 or 30 seconds to load. Reports time out. Sales reps grumble about the system. Leadership starts talking about hardware upgrades or even replacing the ERP entirely. In our experience, the real cause is almost never hardware.
Index fragmentation from years of growth, statistics that are stale because nobody updates them, stored procedures that were fine at 10,000 orders per day and fall apart at 50,000, missing indexes on columns that became important over time, and plan cache thrashing because parameter sniffing is producing bad execution plans.
Open SQL Profiler or extended events on the production database. Capture a trace over a full workday. Sort by duration and CPU cost. The top ten queries will usually represent 80 percent of the pain. Most of those queries can be fixed with better indexes, rewritten logic, or proper statistics.
Start with the easy wins. Rebuild fragmented indexes on the top tables. Update statistics with full scan on the tables that have grown the most. These two steps alone often deliver 30 to 50 percent improvement before any deeper work. Then move on to query tuning on the top consumers.
Do not throw hardware at the problem as the first move. New servers help, but if the underlying database is sick, new hardware just makes the sick database run faster for a few months before the symptoms come back. Fix the real issue first.
If your distribution ERP is slow and your current MSP cannot diagnose it, we can. Our team has rescued distribution ERPs running on SQL Server many times. See the case study on distribution ERP performance recovery for a specific example.
